safer space principles at IMPRO HELSINKI
Following the principles of a safer space means that everyone's boundaries, needs and wishes
are respected in the operations of Impro Helsinki. By following the principles, we aim to make
Impro Helsinki as safe as possible for all participants. We require commitment to the principles
from all participants in our activities.
We respect everyone
Respect other people’s personal, physical and mental state. You cannot know another person’s
boundaries without first asking about them. So ask before you, for example, touch another
person. If someone tells you that your behavior makes them feel uncomfortable, listen and change
that behavior.
You are responsible for your own actions and behavior. Be aware that your actions have an impact
on other’s despite your good intentions.
We speak about everyone’s body with respect
We talk about our own and other people’s bodies respectfully. We do not accept body shaming or
discrimination. We do not comment on other people’s bodies. We speak about food respectfully,
leaving out judgement toward the food itself and/or portion size.
We promote non-discrimination through our actions
Racism (discrimination based on ethnicity, skin color, language, nationality, culture or religion) is
not accepted here. Ableism (i.e. discrimination based on disability or functional ability) is not
accepted here. Transphobia or homophobia (ie discrimination against gender or sexuality) is not
accepted here.
We do not make assumptions about anyone’s sexuality, gender, nationality, ethnicity, religion,
values, socio-economic background, ability or health. We respect pronouns and names.
Be aware of your own privileges.
Together, we actively promote equality, anti-racism and non-discrimination.
We give space to everyone and respect different points of view
We strive to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to participate in discussions. We give space
for everyone to have a voice without trampling on opinions. We also respect privacy and treat
sensitive topics with respect.
We respect opinions, beliefs, experiences and differing points of view. We do not mock, sneer,
belittle, push aside or embarrass anyone with our words, behaviors or actions.
When mistakes happen, we apologize and learn from them
We all make mistakes sometimes. This is why it is good to discuss them, learn form them and, if
necessary, apologize. Together, we build trust that everyone is coming from a good place.
